There is no glamour in what we do. Since I volunteered, my priorities have changed. A big chunk of my time for family, friends and work has been devoted instead to capacity building and preparedness. I go out of my comfort zones more often now. I've transformed to a mad woman unpacking and repacking my 30 lb backpack every week.
Even the content of my bag has changed! The kikay kit has been replaced by a med kit. The CC cream has been set aside in favor of sunblocks with ultra high SPF. The flowery handkerchief has been replaced by a triangular bandage. I now bring a ridiculous looking poncho instead of my usual pashmina shawl. By golly, even my big pair of white framed sunglasses has been replaced by an aviator shades. Oh and when I shop, I now forgo a Mango sale to save up for a friggin' "orange" helmet and a type V personal flotation device (which I'm betting will be color orange too). That's how drastically my life has been altered since I joined Rescue Team 926, Inc.
But the thing is, I feel... great! Here is a chance to do something meaningful. There are many people who are victimized beyond their control. Why would I pass up the chance to do something when I have the potential to help? Let this be a world wherein the strong assists the weak and the weak rises up to make themselves strong. We are no superhero and I may still show some signs of hesitations. But I am hoping that my little acts of kindness and sometimes impulsive boldness will send ripples of hope to those around me. And for all it's worth, it's truly empowering. I am no lady in distress who needs to be rescued. I AM NOW THE RESCUER.
Rescue 926 is now open for recruitment. I dare you to make that choice
